Jumpstart Your School Year With I Can Statement Tags
I Can Statement Tags are the perfect way to celebrate success in your classroom with your little learners. Easy to print, cut, and hand out.
It’s a regular Tuesday afternoon. Your Kindergarten classroom is buzzing with activity. You notice one student is super excited about the math game they’re playing.
It turns out that the concept you’ve been teaching has just gone off like a lightbulb for them. Right at that moment, they understand what it’s all about. BOOM!
Their excitement is off the charts. You feel that beautiful sense of joy that comes when one of your students finally ‘get it’. Don’t you just LOVE that?
Now, I love stickers just as much as the next teacher but sometimes you need something more specific than a ‘well done’ or ‘terrific effort’. Stickers and certificates are useful and have their place. But, as teachers, we can be more targeted with our response.
It would be a shame to let that math game success go unnoticed. But what can you do?
Well, there’s this…I CAN STATEMENT TAGS can fill the void and give your young learners the feedback they need.
Use these and your students will know they are kicking their learning goals at school.
SO, WHAT ARE I CAN STATEMENT TAGS?
I Can Tags are a similar concept to brag tags and tags for rewards, but each one is based on an I Can Statement. They are perfect little nuggets of feedback.
Some schools use these phrases to help map out goals and achievements for their students. But, you don’t even need to teach at a school that implements I Can Statements to use these nifty little tags.
Each statement supports what your students could be learning across Kindergarten wherever you are in the world.
So, the idea is SUPER SIMPLE – print them, cut them apart and hand out to your students.
And, if 2020 threw you a teaching curveball, you’ve probably changed the way you teach and share with your students. To help you out, I’ve got you covered with a method of sharing these digitally with your students. Scroll to the end to find out more.
I Can Statement Tags are perfect to use in a multitude of ways to suit the learning needs of your students.
- attach to your whiteboard instead of handwriting out each learning goal
- hang the tags on a ring for each student
- display on desks with a mini binder clip stand
- students collect their tags on a ball chain necklace
- students can take them home to share their achievements with their family
- glue into a communication journal or student daybook to show achievement
- written with language that young learners understand
- reinforces a growth mindset by promoting and developing an I can attitude with your students
- helps parents understand standards and expectations for different topics
YOU CAN USE I CAN TAGS ONLINE
Now, teaching has taken a sharp turn into the online arena. Teaching has moved to our devices and our students are learning at a distance. Handing out stickers and tags to our students has been put on hold. We simply can’t do it.
BUT, you can still share these with your students with a little work around.
All of these tags can be converted into a digital image. And then you can share them with your students on your teaching platform online.
HERE’S HOW…
Once the PDF file with the tags is opened on your desktop, you can take a screenshot of the tag you need. It saves as an image file. These can be added to your student’s work online.
Here’s the link to a quick video showing how to do it on a Mac.
And just like that, you’re giving specific and direct feedback to your students about the skills and knowledge they’re achieving. Yes!
